Unintended Hiatus

May 24, 2021

From writing but not from baking. In January we moved from the Upper West Side down to East Midtown. Why move in the middle of a pandemic? You do what you have to do when you have to do it. Suffice it to say our old landlord wasn’t terribly accommodating but new one was amazingly so. Also, how could we pass up an honest-to-gosh rent stabilized apartment in Manhattan? (We nearly did but that’s a story for another time.)

I’ve been baking quite a bit in the new kitchen since January but I haven’t written here. Part of reason is getting used to the new space, new routines, new routes, and the like. Another part is something I have to admit to myself: a bit of Pandemic Emotional Malaise. As positive as I’ve tried to stay during this last year, I’ve fallen into a sinkhole or two that’s kept my writing at the barest of minimums. The energy it takes to safely navigate between home and work and back again while also trying to keep the home environment COVID-free is substantial and that depleted my reserves for writing. Constant risk-assessment and vigilance can be exhausting.

Now that both Michele and I are fully vaccinated, though, I feel some of that fog lifting. We’ve been able to gather with friends we haven’t seen unmasked in over a year or longer and that contact, the ability to actually hug without fear, pulled back a heavy veil from my heart and mind. We’re not at the end of the pandemic book, far from it, but we’ve at least moved into a new chapter. I hope to make better use of this space, and your time, from here on out.

Below are a few of the bakes I’ve done since we moved in. The oven is quite a bit newer than the old one and is taking some time to get used to but I’ve managed to be happy with much of what I’ve baked. I’ll have a few recipes for you later.

Thanks for hanging around. More to come!
